With power comes not only responsibility but heat as well and the heat is definitely on the owners of the latest +General Motors Corvette flagship, C7 Z06.
As the owners of these failures on four wheels grasp at the straws, combating high engine operating temperatures, with the coolant and oil temperatures reaching new highs (literally), the failure of adequate application of not just sound engineering principles but basic laws of physics become more and more obvious.
Although these problems were obvious from the very beginning, as mentally incapacitated as the buyers of the newest Corvettes are, it takes quite a bit of personal misery to have this undeniable truth finally sink in.
What follow this "sudden" discovery is a very entertaining rush to come up with a working solution, something that could at least limit the quintessential automotive cluster fuck that newest flagship turned out to be. Although the problems will continue to exist, it is nevertheless great fun to watch the kool aid drinking Corvette sheep lessen the aftermath of the flawed attempt at designing that bargain "certified supercar" that managed to carve out quite an embarrassing legacy for the current Corvette design team chief +Tadge Juechter .
One of the most blatant examples of the truly fucked up flagship design lies underneath, in the area where oil cooling system crosses path with the exhaust system and specifically, the catalytic convertor on the driver side.
Not only this idiotic design uses oil to coolant cooler design only but to top off the stupidity, the pathetic oil cooler happens to be located immediately next to the catalytic converter. The proximity of the oil filter serves of course as the icing on the cake of Juechter's legacy of stupidity.
What is really interesting is the fact that not only are these components so close to each other but that there is absolutely no attempt to employ even a single heat shield anywhere. This part alone leads to a conclusion that brilliant Juechter and his team's real objective was to incorporate not an oil cooler but oil HEATER to set the "most capable Corvette ever" apart from all other cars. As a matter of fact, considering how idiotic this layout is, absence of this oil heater would be most likely a better solution.
Here is a photo to illustrate this idiotic situation, along with a very funny attempt to create a heat containment solution? Certainly, this is not a heat barrier since those require an air gap and it certainly is not an actual heat containment due to the patchwork like design but nevertheless, the proximity of the oil heater to the catalytic converter is very obvious.
And here is more of the same, effectively repositioning the heat radiation area within the exhaust system and with the same absolute lack of air circulation, a valiant effort but a big failure nevertheless.
Here is another funny attempt, nice try but still a big failure for the reasons stated above.
And here is a real good one, someone apparently spending a serious chunk of money on ceramic coating applied to all components of the exhaust system (hopefully those oxygen sensor flange threads were protected from the coating process? The threads look black so maybe this was not a concern, LOL).
Interestingly enough, not a single effort to wrap the exhaust system? Hmmm...
Ironically enough, the only validy solution... as shown on the previous generation of Z06, with extra cooler added... Maybe Reese Calloway may want to start thinking about not just hacking up the hoods but front bumper as well?
