Corvette C7 Stingray and 2015 C7 Z06 aftermarket diffuser-another shining example of suckers being born every second

If there is one thing that Corvette C7 aftermarket should be commended for is its uncanny ability to cash in on the perservering ignorance and outright stupidity that fittingly appears to be the common denominator uniting C7 buyers.

A very funny example of this situation can be observed (unsurprisingl) among the supplier of the aftermarket aerodynamic "aides" for the latest and finest (at least according to +Tadge Juechter ) +General Motors "true American sportscar".

Although mentioned on numerous occasions in this blog, the aftermarket suppliers cannot be blamed for exploiting the opportunity to cash in on the buyers stupidity, relevant information is readily available and obviously, bank account balance is considerably higher for just about all C7 buyers than their corresponding IQ numbers.

Here is this funny example: the rear diffuser.

In factory form, the newest Corvette generation does not have a rear diffuser, just like the preceeding generation.  Yes, there is a filler panel of questionable visual appeal but besides the exhaust surround and under bumper filler, there is nothing that actually could function as a diffuser.

Altough a rear diffuser can be an invaluable aerodynamic aide, providing downforce WITHOUT introducing an extra drag (in fact, when properly executed, the diffuser will reduce the drag), there are certain prerequisites that must be met before employing a rear diffuser:

1.  The underside of the car has to be designed to work in concert with the diffuser, employing smooth panels promoting undisturbed air flow and preventing turbulence.

2.  Properly shaped front bumper and correctly designed front splitter have to be employed to direct the air under the car and into the stagnation zone above the splitter.

3. The air has to flow smoothly around the car, minimizing turbulence and intrusion of turbulent air from entering the car's underside.

4. There has to be a compatiblity between the aerodynamics of the upper portion of the car and its underside, maximizing the downforce generation and preventing counterproductivity.

5.  If employed, a rear diffuser should include a smooth horizontal transition from the undertray, beginning right around the centerline of the rear wheels and gradually extend upwards, beyond the rear bumper of the car.

So how does the newest generation of Corvette fit in this scenario?  Is there a point to even pretend a rear diffuser should be used?

The short answer: unless this is done for aesthetical reasons, any money spent on rear diffuser is a complete waste.

The long answer: the newest Corvette's design failed to take in consideration employment of aerodynamically designed undertray and subsequently rendered rear diffuser worthless.

Just for starters, for the front splitter to be effective aerodynamically, the split/transition zone has to be well defined and turbulence reducing.  In case of both, Stingray and Z06, the idiotic fangs remove any possibility of this being the case.  In reality, the front of the newest Corvette is more of air dam/air brake (just like the idiotic rear spoiler) than a splitter.  Then of course, there is the issue of the issue of truly anti aerodynamic underside of the America's favorite sports car-just as fucked up as it could be, slapped together as a result of simply cramming shit under the car instead of designing the underside and undertray.

The fact that Juechter and company did not bother to spend any time designing the underside of the car is pretty obvious from the lack of OEM diffuser, instead, there is just a filler panel, terminated BEFORE the mufflers of the exhaust system.  Clearly, a sad testimony to the bullshit behind the claims of the most aerodynamic Corvette ever.

So how do these aftermarket vendors fit here?  Here is an example of one of these bullshit artists, exploiting stupidity of the C7 owners and cashing in on their ignorance.  This is from a place calling itself, LMAO, WEAPONX.  What makes this example super funny is the license plate frame proudly stating HARVARD ALUMNI (obviously not in aerodynamics, LMAO).

What the fuck is this supposed to stand for?  Apparently this numbnut must be fighting for his cut from the C7 nuthuggers wallets?  Must be...

So what does this CARBON FIBER aftermarket UPGRAYEDD do?  Besides giving the Viagra using Corvette owners a carbon fiber induced hard on and relieving their wallets, absolutely nothing, jackshit to be precise.  Did the WeaponX tool come up with an undertray kit and revised front end?

Nope, like with any other Corvette C7 related vendor, the C7 buyers can relieve their wallets buying another idiotic piece pretending to be a front splitter.  To the credit of this jerkX, he is obviously not the only one cashing in...

Oh and yes, there are cars and designers who actually understand the concept of rear diffuser, A FUNCTIONAL ONE THAT IS...

  1. Love it, many OEM, expensive ones at that like AMG are perpetrators as well!
