In reality, +General Motors is as likely to produce a high performance mid engine (behind the driver, not the bullshit behind front axle way) vehicle as it is to turn the current Corvette flagship into anything even remotely related to a track capable car. But... if this ever happened, it would have to be under BUICK brand, IF a current brand of the GM was the only option.
The typical myth is that a mid engine car would be either made concurrently with the front engine Corvette or as a Cadillac since this is the way to give the mid engine car a more exclusive status while not competing directly with the obsolete current Corvette layout.
Unfortunately for GM and the enthusiasts, a move like this would be a guarantee for the car's failure. Why? Because just like the current Corvette, Cadillac as a brand and then specifically as a Cadillac ATS are considered true pieces of shit for the purpose of evaluating initial quality and reliability ratings.
The current Consumer Reports reliability study places Cadillac exactly at the bottom of the reliability list, 25th to be exact while Chevrolet manages to do just slightly better. However, of all GM brands, Buick manages to score the seventh spot from the top. Although this seems like a fluke, it is not, due to the fact that Buick line up does not include SUVs and pick up trucks that typically drag GM down in any reliability or quality evaluations.
In addition to the reliability problems for both Cadillac and Chevrolet, the initial quality ranking renders not just Corvette C7 but Cadillac ATS are equal pieces of shit, giving them the lowest possible score.
Why is the Cadillac ATS so important? Well, this is the car that shares the same Alpha platform with the Generation 6 Camaro and problems experienced with the ATS will to some extent spread to the new Camaro.
So what does that have to do with the mid engine sports car? The answer lies in one word: PERCEPTION. Perception can make or break any car just as much as real world problems since rumours spread even faster than herpies and gonorrhea among cheaply priced whores and their eager customers.
In case of Cadillac, the perception is firmly based on real life experiences, with the current line up plagued by as many nightmares as the past Cadillacs, especially those blessed with the Northstar turds.
From the technical point, mid engine sportscar is the only way to sustain high performance these days, just like smaller DOHC turbo charged engines are, there is just no other way around it. Light weight, midengine car has no peers among other sportscars and if someone insists this is not the case, shit like Corvette C7 happens.
Two points prove this quite well:
1. Generation 5 Dodge Viper
2. Generation 6 Chevrolet Camaro.
Dodge Viper like Corvette, peaked during its previous generation, the only reason why it is still a good performer is its carry over nature, lack of complexity allowed it to lose weight, there is no more future for that car beyond the plateau it is stuck in right now.
2016 Camaro on the other hand, it has changed quite a bit, getting lighter and smaller, catching up with the C7 Corvette rather easily while Corvette stands still (literally and figuratively) because the limitations of the design objectives do not allow it to go any further. Ironically enough, the new Camaro became a cost feasible four seat Corvette, putting the plastic fantastic in real danger of extinction and unless something radical happens, this will be the outcome.
However, IF GM decides to produce a real sports car, it better not be a Chevrolet or Cadillac, both brands are permanently tainted (UNLIKE BUICK, LOL).
