The funniest part in Corvette C7 Z06 and C7 Stingray General Motors "Performance Parts" catalog

Considering the already established failure of the sevent generation of +General Motors Corvette as the best performing Corvette ever, especially in light of the resounding disaster surrounding the C7 Z06 flagship, a "performance parts catalog" sounds like a quintessential oxymoron but... the biggest joke these days does not come from the aftermarket power brokers, the biggest joke comes from none other but GM itself and specifically the newest addition to that "performance" catalog.

If the fact tjat the only items offered for the newest Corvette are limited to gems like custom luggage set, non functional spoilers, air flow restructing "aero" license plates and car covers, there is a new item and this one, takes the stupidity of GM and its marketing department to the newest heights.

It is unclear if any of the idiots on the Corvette team comprised of +Tadge Juechter , Harlan Charles and few others had any direct input here but certainly, considering how stupid this thing is, it would not be a big surprise.

So what is this item?  A pair of braces, advertised as "underbody braces".  This part on its own is already funny considering those bullshit claims regarding super rigidity of the "new" structure, why on Earth resort to that ancient concept of braces instead of designing a self contained and self supporting "frame"?

Nevertheless, these braces connect the A-pillars to the chassis rails and like everything else, are made of aluminum alloy.  The pieces are relatively small and weigh about 10 lbs each.

Long and behold, there is a "high performance and weight saving" UPGRAYEDD offered by GM, in carbon fiber replacements, offering a whopping 17 percent "weight savings".  These replacements are about 250 a piece, so for about 500 dollars, a truly amazing 3.4 pounds can be shed off the 3500 pound behemoth which already sounds like deal of century (no, it is not UNSPRUNG WEIGHT saving).

These braces are shown here, marked as number 4, BTW...

These brace UPGRAYEDD, as stupid as it may be is not actually the funny part, the funny part is the disclaimer GM attaches to this FACTORY UPGRADE that is nothing short of a disclaimer VOIDING POWERTRAIN WARRANTY while disclosing NEGATIVE PERFORMANCE IMPACT as a result of purchasing these CF brace replacements.

Here is the part description, clearly indicating NO IMPACT on the rigidity of the chassis:

Chevrolet Performance engineers developed this product for the Corvette Z06 and the Performance program. These carbon fiber underbodybraces are about 17 percent lighter than the aluminum braces on the CorvetteStingray, while maintaining original overall torsional stiffness. They are adirect replacement for the standard braces and fit all C7 Corvettes (Z06 and Non-Z06).

Here is the factory warranty disclosure:

Warranty Information:
  • 12 months/Unlimited miles on parts only. See Chevrolet Performance catalog for full warranty details.
  • The Carbon Fiber Underbody kit is a "parts only" warranty and is "off road use only", and the remaining vehicle warranty is voided once the part/s is/are installed.
  • See *warranty information for further details.

And here is that little asterisk that without any doubt the funniest part of this stupidity, stating nothing less than the complete opposite of the sales advertisement:

*The use of this engine or component in a new Chevrolet vehicle voids the powertrain warranty and may result in adversely affecting vehicle performance. In some cases, use of certain Chevrolet Performance components may result in the failure of other components or systems, thus voiding the warranty of the failed component or system. Chevrolet Performance components installed in new vehicles do not retain their regular warranty coverage unless otherwise noted.
Now, it would not only be difficult to make up this shit, it would be IMPOSSIBLE.   Does anyone at GM read this stuff before releasing it and realize the implications?  Why would anyone be so stupid to buy this junk, saving no weight but losing the factory warranty in the process?  As stupid as Corvette owners are, chances are very good they would not fall for this trap, no matter how much kool aid it is served with...

Really GM, is the coroporate recruitment limited to asylums only?  This is truly some funny shit here..

  1. Oh my god this has to be the dumbest fucking modification ever. A waste of money and another way for GM to make money and fuck you on your warranty. Whoever came up with this upgrade needs to be beaten with it.

  2. 500 dollars for 3.5 lbs? Maybe it looks cool though. Does it come with a big mirror that slides under the car so it can be seen at cars and coffee? If so, Holy Shit sign my dumb ass up.
