The number of failed torque tubes resulting from this not just flaw but outright +Tadge Juechter 's incompetence and stupidity continues to grow at truly alarming rate and yet somehow, +General Motors does not want to admit to this problem, just like one would expect GM to behave...
However, as much as GM does not want to admit to this problem, it just did... No, Juechter did not make a public confession and admitted to another C7 fuck up (and there are so many others besides this one), instead, GM decided to offer the fix as another so called "performance upgrade". In other words, the ever infamous GMPP will be offering a variety of parts related to the torque tube that should be offered to everyone as the fix expected from ethical company and charge the schmucks stupid enough to buy these pieces of shit while voiding their factory warranty. Now, how clever is this move? Apparently C7 Stingray and C7 Z06 are subject to the effects of exhaust system literally cooking the torque tube only on the track? LOL...
Not that it matter but in real life, the torque tube will be cooked considerably worse in a slow moving traffic in hot weather, not while racing this junk but of course, how could Juechter admit his fuck up and lack of automotive engineering comprehension otherwise?
As already described in this blog, the fundamental problem lies in the location of the tunnel plate, this is the reason why exhaust cooks the carrier bearings and rubber couplers and unless air circulation is improved, preferrably by relocating the plate itself, the problems will persist.
Of course, nobody in GM is familiar with Occam's Razor and thus, there is quite a variety of parts aimed at fixing the problem created by Corvette designers and engineers in the first place.
Among the offerings there is the carbon fiber tube housing that apparently negates the need for steel? What happened to the AFM induced vibrations? Did they go away or nobody cares anymore and if nobody cares, why wasn't the tube housing made of aluminum in the first place? Would be lighter than steel and considerably cheaper, not to mention it would dissipate heat much better as well. Interestingly enough, no heat shield wrap offered with this great item, apparently this housing does not need one? LOL

Then, there is the entire carbon fiber torque tube assembly, with bellhousing and surprise surprise, heat resistant couplers? And why is the entire assembly wrapped in a heat barrier type of material? Why isn't this being done to the regular cars, at GM's expense?
Then, there is a shaft assembly, with the only difference being it includes those "heat resistant" couplers but with no heat barrier (no GM, it is not heat shield) since the housing is not included. The question here is, how long will these couplers last without that heat shield? Obviously, not GM's concern and once again, Corvette owning schmucks will pay for what should be there in the first place.

Finally, here is the actual heat shield to be installed between the torque tube and the exhaust system. Of course, there is still the tunnel plate encapsulating the entire area occupied by the torque tube and exhaust but still, the tools who bought 2014 Stingrays have to pay, once again, paying for something GM should include in the first place.
Here is an interesting side point: why is exactly GM charging over four grand for the carbon fiber torque tube when aftermarket can offer torque tubes for Corvette C6 for 1300? Ironically enough, since C6 did not include the AFM, the aftermarket can offer torque tube that eliminates the rubber couplers altogether. Hmmm...
GM's MO is there as usual and it is truly a shitty way of doing business, making owners pay for the GM's incompetence and voiding their warranty at the same time. Apparently human stupidity never cease to exist, just like there are tools willing to vote for that bitch Clinton, there are tools gladly parting their ways with the money and then again and again. As usual, this blog appreciate these idiots for their entertaining value.



The advertisement for the heat shield is clearly stating we should have put it on the 2014 corvette. However Chevrolet has its hands out again, asking the owners to pay for their mistakes just like the taxpayers. Who in the hell would buy this atrocity?
ReplyDeleteThe shield is standard issue on 2015's and up. First year buyers are SOL as usual. No such thing as good will from GM. On the bright side, this shield is a waste of money as long as the tunnel plate is still there.

DeleteYes indeed but let's get this straight. The world has a shitty way of doing business. It's called planned obsolescence. All car makers have it (except maybe Pagani or Rolls Royce). For the rest of us who can't drop $2 million on a car we are left with Ford, GM and some imports. I'm sure GM puts a ton or research into making things break after a certain amount of miles. Magically right after the warranty is up. If you think about it.. Corporations own the government so of course they are corrupt too! The world economy is a pyramid scam by design but what ya gonna do? I, for one bought a 2016 Z06 and love it. It has serious power, looks badass, can be used as a daily driver (as long as the roads aren't wet) and can be taken to the track which I will be doing in a few weeks. Am I going to do 30 hot laps in a row to test the cooling prowess? Hell no because I will wear out and get overheated much sooner than the car will. If you want to talk about defective products, let's talk about the GM of the 80's. I had a brand spanking new '83 Chevy Chevette that literally fell apart in the driveway with maybe 100 miles on the odometer. Was the worst car i ever wasted money on and I swore I would never buy another GM product again. Fast forward 30 years (after my anger subsided) I now have a '16 Volt and a '16 Z06. Happy to report no issues whatsoever. Quality has gotten better over the years (probably due to lawsuits and numerous deaths) but they have gotten better! lol

DeleteJULY 28,2017: I have a 2016 Corvette Stingray with 9500 miles (yes it will be 2 years old in Dec 2017 and has only 9500 miles)> I heard some rumble noice in the back when I was shifting into reverse or forward into drive. The dealer says the torque tube needs to be replaced BUT IN THE ENTIRE CHEVY SYSTEM THERE ARE NO REPLACEMENT PARTS AT HAND AND ITS ON BACKORDER. I'm fortunate that the drivetrain is under warranty and I bought the expanded warranty at purchase, but I have to drive around with this problem since there appears no fix available. Any suggestions????? I have contacted Chevy and filed a complaint.

DeleteThere already is a class action "under investigation" by a California attorney. I contacted the region and they called to tell me there are no parts available, it's "on order" and they are closing my claim. Nice....I kinda already knew that.
DeleteClass action suit will not resolve your problem. Hopefully you have in writing dealer's refusal to repair your car due to the lack of parts, if not, get it in writing. There are many attorneys willing to take on GM for refusing to honor factory warranty based on lack of parts. GM also owes you a rental car until the issue is resolved, a complete breakdown further down the road may put your life in danger, if your car breaks down in a heavy traffic situation.
