Laws of aerodynamics dictate that the less clearance between the front and bottom of the car and the ground, the better. For obvious reasons, the less air flows under the car, the more effective downforce will be on the car. Furthermore, the smoother and lower the front of the car is, the lower the pressure center (the cutoff between high and low pressure areas) will be located, thus, further increasing the effect of the high pressure flow over the car increasing the downforce. Finally, the smoother the front of the car is, the less turbulence will be created. Turbulence on its own is in no way result of downforce generating measures should be blamed for extra turbulence.
There are other elements to the basic principles of aerodynamics, reducing the frontal exposed tire interface, minimum wheel well clearance, smooth underbody of the car and controlled air exit at the rear of the car, they all add up to both smaller drag and higher downforce.
Somehow, absolutely nobody at +General Motors , including the master mind of Z06 failure and mouthpiece extraordinaire, +Tadge Juechter feel the newest generation of Corvette has to play by these simple but very effective rules.
After a quick visit to a local dealer who happened to have a Z06 in stock, equipped with a measuring tape, it is beyond obvious that counterproductivity is the name of the game for the newest flagship, just like it has been for the base Stingray.
At the lowest point up front, the front so called splitter has over SIX INCHES of ground clearance, followed by about 5.5 underbody clearance and over TWO INCHES of gap between the wheels and the edges of the openings on top. Now, quick comparison with my own cars gave me 3.6 and 3.8 inches respectively for the front and the same numbers for the underbody clearance. Finally, the wheel well gaps were less than one inch. Obviously, none of this matters to GM but considering the full track and dragstrip failure this newest flagship continues to experience, maybe it should.
What is really concerning is how messy the front of the car is, clearly raising serious doubts about that super high force the car generates, as a matter of fact, if this is the NET downforce this car generates, let me call it a full BULLSHIT. There is absolutely no way this front hackjob can generate so much downforce and certainly, turbulence and drag should not be mistaken for it.
The effects of this total disregard are already noticeable, the lack of high speed acceleration and embarrassing top speed are already there, just as is the lousy gas mileage and heatsoak issues. Of course, none of this matters for a poser striking a high performance pose but it is certainly important to the very few that actually attempt to follow up on the marketing bullshit and hype that elevated this car to a SUPERCAR title. Time to live up to the hype has already passed!!!
