Orange peel, the quintessential seventh generation of Corvette trademark continues to appear and frighten the buyers, just like it did in 2014 and just like it will in 2016 model year.
As this blog pointed out on many occasions in the past, texture in the paint finish is nothing abnormal, especially with the current water based urethane automotive paints. This orange peel is on any cars, regardless of price, with the more expensive finishes getting the finishing state consisting of wet sanding and buffing the paint finish afterwards BUT with one caveat: the number of clear coat layers and the resulting thickness takes in account that final stage. The most affordable car that includes this final stage of painting is none other than Dodge Viper. The results are truly spectacular and there is no issues regarding paint finish durability.
However, like in the past, the truly stupid Corvette buyers continue to strip down the already too thin coat of clear that all new Corvettes have. Since there are several reasons for the truly shitty paint finish that persists on the newest Corvettes, it is impossible to level off the surface of the paint without stripping the clearcoat completely.
The result is a remaining paint job that is truly a ticking time bomb, leaving the underlying base coat completely vulnerable to the environment and subject to premature oxidation and road shrapnel, at least for those cars that do not spend 95 percent of their lives under cover in a garage and never see rain and sun.
Like with the first year of these shitty cars, the future buyers of these currently "great" looking turds are especially susceptible to learning the hard way why the clear coat should not be fucked with on a car with the basic paint job, just like the Corvette is.
Here is another example of one of these idiots, completely clueless and apparently on a mission, tilting at the paint quality windmills. What is really amazing is the steady supply of these idiots who continue to make the bad situation considerably worse. Again, none of these tools seem to comprehend the fact that there is no catalyst in the base coat. The real question here is why is Forrest Gump absent from Corvette commercials? Maybe too smart for the Corvette crowd? Must be...
