One would think that the price, horsepower, performance and market appeal would be the reasons.
However, it is not so at all. What really separates these two cars is the MENTALITY of people responsible for these cars and the support and directives they get from their corporations, Fiat/Chrysler and GM.
The fact these two cars are such opposites, with one setting performance as the main objective and the Corvette putting mass produced cheapness, fuel economy and convenience to serve the AARP belonging buying crowd is simply the EFFECT of mentality Tadge Juechter and Ralph Gilles demonstrate.
The results are pretty obvious, with Viper gaining a variety of performance oriented features (high tech composite intake manifold, better suspension, etc) and losing weight. \
What happens to C7 at the same time? This car gains about TWO HUNDRED POUNDS in its Z51 version, laughable 24 hp and truly shameful AFM that results in new Corvette chugging along on FOUR CYLINDERS while happy retirees take a nap while coasting freeways from one gathering and waxing event to another.
Supposedly, both cars share variable valve timing but here again, only Viper has the true cam in cam system that was actually designed to extract extra horsepower and widen the torque curve. A closer look at VVT used in new Corvette quickly reveals the true purpose of the very incomplete system GM used: ACTUAL DECREASE IN HORSEPOWER and torque at higher RPMs due to truly cheap and simplistic method of phasing vs. actual cam in cam method Ricardo Engineering designed for the SRT Viper.
This interview with SRT team is quite revealing and quite depressing for any Corvette owner or potential buyer who can actually use their head for something more than simply Corvette logo hat hanger.

Pretty simple objective: performance and more performance, no AFM, no DI and no pretense of having the cake and eating it.
Seeing the interviews with Tadge Juechter and the rest of that GM team can confuse someone if these people were designing a minivan or a sportscar. GET A CLUE GM.
