Foolishly, I decided to stop by my local Corvette dealer while walking my dogs last night. There were two cars that just showed up on their lot, a black Z51 convertible and Laguna Blue Z51 coupe.
What I saw upon a closer look left me speechless and in a full state of shock.
First of all, I checked the production dates of both cars, just to make sure they were not a fluke from the initial production batch but they were not, end of April, 2014 and thus, subject to price increase.
Second, the cars sat outside of the showroom building and since it was after dark, sat directly under fluorescent lights, lit up quite well actually.
Finally, the dealer was already closed and besides the cleaning crew, there was nobody else to spoil my viewing experience.
At 20 feet, both cars looked not too bad, at least with regards to paint gloss (never mind any problems with design) and this led me to believe that paint quality was actually improved as the production progressed and buyers complaints poured in.
However, there was a shocking surprise looking at both cars, under different angles and up close-both cars looked like absolute PIECE OF SHIT!!!
It is actually hard to believe how bad the orange peel and paint runs were on both cars, the finish was just horrible!!! The orange peel could be felt by touch actually and what was really strange was the fact that the orange peel was not on the vertical surfaces as before, THE ORANGE PEEL WAS EVERYWHERE, including the hood!!! This part is actually new, even the earliest examples I saw in the past did not have orange peel on horizontal surfaces, yes, they had paint contamination and fish eyes but no orange peel.
Apparently, things have changed at +General Motors Bowling Green and UAW crew expanded the paint quality standard that would make the Florida orange growers proud, to the entire car. Wow, this is right down impressive.
The orange peel is now not just a small surface irregularity, the surface of a golf ball sounds perfect for accurate comparison.
To make the matter worse, bot h cars had serious issues with body panel fitment and gap consistency. The gap between the quarter panel and rear bumper had a 50 percent consistency variation from the bottom to top, non existent at the top and huge at the bottom. Both cars had a very visible warping in the surface of front and rear bumpers and to top it off, the gap between the trailing edge of the doors and the door jam was beyond huge, way bigger than on the earlier examples which is right down puzzling. Could there be an issue with thermal expansion of the body panel materials?
One thing is for certain, the door opening gap was TWICE as big as the 5mm +Tadge Juechter advertised a few months ago. Nice try Tadge but a complete lie that is getting worse as time goes by.
In addition to the issues mentioned above, Laguna Blue car had VISIBLE sanding marks UNDER the paint!!! Seems like the UAW crew was doing some fine surface finishing before painting the car and used 40 grade sand paper to accomplish the goal.
To add insult to injury, both cars had a crapload of surface scratches that without any doubt came from the "protective" transport cover.
Overall, the viewing experience was beyond shocking and repulsive. How it is possible for anyone to allow cars that truly look like proverbial piece of shit go through supposed quality control at the factory and then again at the dealers selling them is impossible to comprehend. However, what is even more difficult to understand is the FACT someone will actually buy these POS cars. Corvette C6 did not have the greatest quality, there was orange peel, misaligned and warped panels but at least that idiot Juechter did not claim anything was getting better at that time.
Let me ask you Tadge, once again, ARE YOU BLIND OR REALLY SO FULL OF SHIT? Go and take a look at any of the Stingrays that come of BG plant. If you need assistance to show you the problems, let me know. Personally, I would never ever consider new Corvette even if someone was giving me one for free.
