Even though the ignorance of +General Motors marketing department and cluelessness of +Tadge Juechter are most likely directly responsible for the Stingray moniker used on the newest Corvette, there is certainly a great amount of irony that resulted from this SNAFU.
In reality, if indeed this generation of Corvette was designed to celebrate Zora Duntov's contributions to the Corvette former progress, the new Corvette should be called STING RAY and not Stingray.
But... since so many other things are totally effed up with this newest Corvette, Stingray designation is just a perfect fit. Why? The third generation of Corvette is widely recognized as the absolute bottom of Corvette history. The first year of C3 Sting Ray is the worst Corvette ever, with so many problems that buyers at that time literally dumped their cars right after the purchase.
One cannot help laughing seeing what is happening to the newest Stingray, repeating exactly the same fate as its predecessor. A bloated car with very polarizing design and so many quality and design flaws that could make Chevrolet Monza look like a Toyota Corolla, reliability wise.
The one significant difference here is that unlike with 1969, this time around, GM managed to make the new Corvette even worse than in its first year, certainly setting a new standard in all time low quality control wise.
The total disaster of TWO Stingrays blowing their motors while being tested by Car and Driver very effectively wiped out any advertising gains made at the time of introduction of this disaster. The bogus defective oil filter story will be remembered for a very long time, reminding potential buyers that the GM's mentality of denial and deceit is alive and kicking, regardless of the number of meaningless recalls Mary Recall Barra declares (over 2000 2015 Stingrays on permanent no sale hold is there to drive this point even better).
Intentionally or not, GM managed to revive the Stingray name, one that should be permanently forgotten. May be time to change the name to STING RAY, hoping for the best. Doubtful this would help, without fixing the actual problems but it may work for a few weeks, fooling the Corvette enthusiasts, although this apparently is not a difficult task period.
