Many months ago, this blog pointed out that it will take more than one version of the upcoming Corvette Z06 to come up with at least semi marketable performance figures for this newest porker.
There is no doubt that +Tadge Juechter wanted to please his +General Motors corporate leash holders and come up with the ultimate version of Corvette Z06 but he failed and he failed big time. Juechter failed to the point where the newest Z06 is a true embarrassment to the entire automotive community.
The Corvette team has been very tight lipped regarding Z06 performance. Juechter tried to release figures only when they could be presented to the preceding generation of Corvette but this guy fucked up from the very beginning.
After Z06 crashed at Nurburgring, failing to deliver performance expected by many, Juechter moved on to the drag strip, yielding some quick 0-60 and quarter mile times. However, the trap speed suffered, purely due to ground effects that literally weighed the already heavy porker down, resulting in trap speed lower than the one for the last ZR1. Big fail right there and the failure was not helped by the fact that only car with the automatic transmission could produce some superior figures.
Of course the whole thing literally fell apart after Dodge disclosed the performance figures for of all things, a 4600 pound behemoth called Dodge Charger Hellcat. Not only did this car have considerably more power than this new Z06 but in spite of its extra weight, kept up just fine with the Z06. But... this is not the end of the fiasco... only the beginning.
Considering the car will be on sale and delivered to customers in just a few days, another example of Z06 was delivered to the press, to the writers from Road and Track and Randy Pobst as the test driver.
The results are to put it mildly, a total disaster. First of all, the heat soak manifested itself in full force at the Atlanta race track, in the middle of winter and at only 85 degrees ambient. In fact, that heat soak found good company in the form of engine and automatic transmission full overheat to the point where the car properly resorted to the limp mode AFTER ONLY FOUR LAPS at the track. Atlanta track is not a complicated one nor is it a long one, yet, somehow, the Z06 could not take it and literally crapped out. Now, this is some track car here, with great engine and transmission cooling for sure.
To top off the disaster, the car revealed a very dirty secret: 186 mph top speed. Yes, this is the top speed reserved for the highest level of ground effects but still, this is right down embarrassing, considering only one level of ground effects for the last Corvette ZR1 and top speed of 205 mph.
Yes, this highest downforce porker is slower than the first generation of Corvette C6, equipped with LS2 engine, certainly, some accomplishment here and without any doubt, great credential to call this car a supercar.
What makes it even more embarrassing is the fact that the same Z06, with the lowest level of ground effects still only produces the top speed of only 195 mph. This is 3 miles slower than the last Z06, with 145 hp LESS!!! Now, how embarrassing is this whole thing already? A track car that cannot run on the track and slower than not just ZR1 and Charger Hellcat but relatively underpowered previous Z06.
Now, this blog keeps pointing out how flawed the aerodynamics of this car are, how much penalty the extra weight causes and in the end, all of this comes true.
The real kicker is that this is just the beginning of this humiliation, with considerably more to follow. Now, why exactly is this car considered the fastest production Corvette ever? Juechter has a lot of explaining to do why anyone should be motivated to cough up 100 grand on car that not only looks hideous but cannot go either. If this is supposed to be a supercar, this must be a direct throw back to the 70's, LOL.
all i can say is the lies of Garbage Motors is sad.im a FORD guy.the lies about the vette being so good, and the SCRAPMARO z28 is sickening.i bet the z28 that was used for all of the mags.was a RINGER car.
ReplyDeleteYes,right on article above.The C6-ZR1 is still a better looking,faster over all Vette.Top end,ZR1 wins all day long,anything 150mph.&up.GM is cheating on their 0-60mph.&quarter mile times by running the Pilot Cup 2s,which are basicly slicks.Motor Trend,tested a 2009 ZR1,at 11.2 seconds,at 130.5mph.in the quarter,onPS2 runflats .If this car had,Pilot Cup2s,10s easily.
ReplyDeleteZR1 still the king, value just went up.
ReplyDeleteNot sure about value going up but the rate of depreciation may be slowing down quite a bit. 205 mph top speed is considerably more enticing to many than unconfirmed track claims of superiority.
ReplyDeleteYes,Peter depreciation slowing down, better way to put it.I would like to commend you on your article above, for telling it like it is,concerning the C7-ZO6.I personally think the C7-ZO6,is a butt ugly,3558 LB.pig.
ReplyDelete3550 is the starting point with the weight of this car, things go up from there, for the automatic and convertible configurations. Convertible auto Z06 should be very close to 3700 pounds. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but unfortunately, all predictions from long time ago continue to come true, with absolutely no chance for improvements. Really too bad but it is what it is. Oh and if you are constructively critical of the "best ever", you are apparently a hater, not someone constructive.
DeleteLOL at the "butt ugly" pun.
