As this blog indicated on many occasions in the past, the newest Corvette pretending to be a Z06 track animal is not just a big performance let down, it is just as bad with regards to its piecemeal design and styling. Not only does the new behemoth fail to deliver in the department of aerodynamics but what is there is right down ghastly and visually repulsive and cheap looking.
Seems like the visual abomination of the Z06 is not complete yet, apparently +General Motors insists on continuing the aesthetic carnage by offering truly ghastly and completely out of place accessories to further bestialize the Z06 porker.
Here is a very good or more precisely, horrible example of visual havoc the Z06 inflicts on eyes of anyone with even a pretense of aesthetics: the splash guards.
Interestingly enough, the splash guards were not available for the previous generation of the Corvette, in its "widebody" version, at least not for the front of the car. The story at that time went that any addition to the trailing edge of the wheel opening would disturb the carefully designed aerodynamics of the car, specifically preventing a "scavenging effect" of the air entering the front wheel opening.
Apparently the aerodynamics are no longer of any concern or perhaps +Tadge Juechter 's team managed to overcome the previous constraints? In reality, the presence of the OEM splash guards offered as accessories signifies something else actually, the acknowledgement of the true buyer group core, the one bound by the extent of gloss on their car and color matching hood props necessary to display the "performance potential" of their precious car at the next Cars and Coffee gathering.
Nevertheless, what GM came up with is truly horrendous, in addition to the standard Bushwacker style aero skirts or fender flares? there is another slab of Pep Boys style plastic on this new flagship, designed as splash guards.
From the aesthetics POV, the non matching and non mating flares and splash guards create a truly hideous visual abomination, with absolutely no attempt to integrate both parts with the car and themselves. The final outcome is truly nauseating, even more of the hastily slapped together parking lot project styling.
To see that what was already truly shitty looking being made into something even worse is actually quite impressive. At least GM is consistent in this tackiness based "style missing function" approach to designing Z06.
Now, if GM and Juchter really insist on this off road fender flare that limits suspension and wheel travel, why not at least offer a fucking Bushwacker flare with or without splash guard extension in SINGLE PIECE variety instead of forcing the geriatric buyers to slap another mismatched piece of plastic right next to the first turd? Too complicated? Absolutely no surprise here at all.
The GM cheapness and lack of integration comes out in the mating area of these little turds with the factory running boards, aka side skirts. The solution could be very simple as well, by offering two different versions that account for the presence of the side skirt or not or at least, a small coupler piece. Of course, this is GM and nobody really cars and thus, the newest flagship looks like the proverbial ass.
I completely agree. I thought I was the only one. To add to the list of fuck ups, is the piano black rear lower valance. Really GM ? You couldn't paint it body color. WTF is that..? In order for me to like the Z I would either have to buy it in black so the valance matches the rest of the car, or paint the valance to match whatever color vette i buy. I would remove the bush wacker flares all together. WTF were you dipshitidiots thinking..OMG.
