As a SPORTS CAR, could Corvette C7 Stingray and C7 Z06 benefit from NOT HAVING three overdrive gears?

In the past, both C5 and C6 Corvette manual transmissions included 2 overdrive gears, with only one Corvette, C6 ZR1 capable of reaching its top speed (205 mph) in second overdrive (6th) gear.  All other Corvettes included the 2nd overdrive as the freeway cruising (and fuel saving measure).

Apparently, +Tadge Juechter  and his +General Motors  corporate handlers decided two overdrive gears were not enough, thus, the newest Corvette manual transmission includes THREE overdrive gears.  Is this really necessary?  ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!  It is a fact that the Stingray cannot reach its top speed (whatever that may be) in 6th gear, just like the predecessors could not do.  Thus, why exactly would you need an intermediate overdrive gear?  To do what exactly?  To add weight, decrease the gear spacing and weaken the transmission due to tighter packaging (reverse and seventh gear share the same shaft)?,

Now, someone could defend the third overdrive gear as a fuel saving measure BUT... there is a small problem with redundancy of other fuel saving (and headache creating) measures like AFM and VVT that happen to function exactly where the third overdrive gear supposed to function as well.

The irony of these three overdrive gears is that main point Juechter keeps on making regarding the LT1 motor, the TORQUE and its flatness:  there is absolutely no need to moderate the overdrive, the seventh gear could have become the sixth gear and nobody could tell a difference while weight, gear spacing and ironically, fuel economy could have been improved, all without affecting that sports car part that is so painfully lost among the nanny and fuel saving measures that really deplete this car of any sports car pretense.  Sad but true but then again, sports car spirit was never intention of this latest Corvette travesty.
