The design flaw and material weakness related defect is definitely there. Between the ill fitting front bumper and very weak design of the fender mating surfaces, any force used to make the front bumper fit on the fender will cause fenders to break. Since both the design lacks any reinforcements and new body panel materials are thinner and weaker than previous SMC, cracks and breakage are a given.
Any car manufacturer priding itself on producing superior and high quality (according to +Tadge Juechter , at least, compatible to Porsche and BMW) vehicles would address this truly embarrassing problem in a hurry but... this is GM, the same manufacturer that required a court order to correct an issue responsible for lives of many GM car owners, what are the chances of GM fessing up and correcting the issue?
The problem here for the buyers is that the flaw cannot be seen without pulling the bumper off, who in their right mind would accept responsibility for issues that cannot be seen while the rest of the company is on fire due to current recalls? Certainly not GM.
The chances of fenders not cracking during assembly are pretty slim, if they do not crack at that time, it will be a miracle. However, should the miracle happen, the rest of the fenders will crack after the car is delivered, with or without even a slight impact, including pushing the car by the front bumper.
Certainly, if there is no fix from the factory in form of epoxy blob under the bumper, there is no way GM will assume any responsibility for defective design and material flaws. Any repairs involving front bumper impact will include fender replacement. But... here is the kicker: if the design and fender material are not changed, the new fenders will crack either during installation or shortly afterwards.
Will +General Motors assist the formerly happy and unaware buyers? NOT A CHANCE!!!
The most impressive thing about the new Corvette is the fact that a day without disclosure of new problems is an exception, as clearly demonstrated by this latest occurrence. Is the mark up applied by select dealers related to fenders not being cracked on their inventory? NO WAY IN HELL!!!
A word of advice to buyers of USED Stingrays: pay someone to remove at least front bumper to find out what you are really paying for. LOL
